Final Heart Beats Tickets Available Only at the Library

The Friends of the Mendon Public Library’s “Heart Beats for Mendon” benefit at 8 p.m., Sat., Feb. 11, 2012 at the Mendon Golf Club is almost sold out. Featuring a performance with Gary Lewis & the Playboys, the benefit will raise funds for the completion of the new Mendon Public Library building project.

Tickets are $30 per person. Guests will enjoy light fare, desserts and a cash bar along with a silent and live auction–all in an intimate lounge-style setting. Steve Grills and the Roadmasters, a local blues group, will open for Gary Lewis & the Playboys. Remaining tickets can only be purchased in person at the Mendon Public Library. The pre-event dinner at the Rabbit Room in Honeoye Falls is sold out although a waiting list is available.  Please call the library at 585.624.6067 or visit the Heart Beats for Mendon website for event information and ticket status.

“Those interested should act now and purchase their tickets while we still have some available,” said Deric West, owner of the Honeoye Falls Market Place and Mendon Meadows Market Place grocery stores and chair of the community phase of the library’s “Heart of our Town” capital campaign. “We are thrilled with the community’s response and its overwhelming support of the library.”

“When tickets run out, people can still support Heart Beats for Mendon by donating an item to the silent auction or sponsoring the event,” West continued. “And they can always support the library by buying an engraved brick, donating to the capital campaign or volunteering their time.”

Dollars raised through this event and the Friends of the Mendon Public Library’s overall “Heart of our Town” capital campaign will help finish funding the library’s new building that opened in June, plus support the planned renovation of the library’s historic 1936 library and 1974 addition that are adjacent to the new building.  In addition, funds raised will support the construction of a connection hall between both buildings and the creation of a children’s room, a teen area and a community meeting room in the renovated space. To date, the library has raised about $350,000 toward its private goal of $1 million to complete the entire project.

Reading is a Family Affair

Enjoying the newest addition to the Jacobs Family Reading Room at Mendon Public Library is Marcy Odell with Oakley (4 years) and Evelyn (2 years).

This beautiful, upholstered, oversized chair encourages moms and dads to snuggle with their little ones while reading a good book and relaxing by the cozy fire.

The chair was purchased by The Friends of the Mendon Public Library to honor outgoing President Lisa Hochgraf for her years of dedicated and innovative service to this important volunteer organization.

Gary and Donna Lewis in Your Library

Gary and Donna Lewis live near the village of Honeoye Falls.

Gary Lewis says he spent a lot of time in the library when he was a kid. There were five boys in his family, so finding a quiet place to study at home was out of the question.

Lewis and his wife, Donna, are enthusiastic about the Feb. 11 “Heart Beats for Mendon” concert benefitting the capital campaign for Mendon Public Library. Gary Lewis and the Playboys will headline the event, which will also feature silent and live auctions.

The Friends of Mendon Public Library are deeply grateful to Gary and Donna for their support!

Kids’ Building Blocks Club Based on Books and Teamwork

Terra proudly displays her “A Movie & Activity Night” creation.

What do you get when you cross books, Legos and creative kids who work together?

Masterpieces.

Mendon Public Library’s Building Blocks club is proof. Meeting every first and third Thursday from 3:30-4:30 p.m., Building Blocks Club introduces a theme (such as “space” or “aircraft”), provides books for ideas, and then encourages kids ages six to 12 to work together in small groups and get creative!

Perry (left), Isaac, Holden and Victoria worked together to create this complex structure. Click on the image to make it larger.

Finished products are placed on display in the library’s Children’s Area for a limited time.

Register your child for an upcoming club meeting by calling 624-6067. Space is limited to 10 so there are enough blocks for everyone.

Tax Forms Now Available

As a participant in the U.S. Internal Revenue Service’s Tax Forms Outlet Program, Mendon Public Library is a place where you can pick up paper tax forms for 2011. The library also offers New York state tax forms.

The IRS’ Tax Forms Outlet Program was developed to increase availability of major tax forms in local communities by offering them through select libraries and post offices. Mendon Public Library has participated in this program for more than a decade.

The tax forms are located to the right of the circulation desk, through the Friends of the Library store. As other 2011 forms are released by the IRS and state revenue agencies, they will also be available at the library.

You also can download federal and state tax forms off the web.
