Storytime Part of Special Memorial Day Flags Event

Click photo to enlarge it.

Despite the heat, the Memorial Day flag raising over the proposed new Veterans Memorial and a Memorial Day storytime still took place last Monday!

The six service flags were raised one at a time as each hymn played. The breeze unfurled the flags perfectly! See details about the Memorial Day books that were read here.

The post-ceremony picnic in Rotary Park–Flags, Families and Fun–also featured music by two great bands, good food prepared by the Rotary and the 2nd annual Honeoye Falls (rubber) Duck Race. Proceeds from the event will benefit the plans for a new Veterans Memorial in the Honeoye Falls Cemetery.

A big thank you to our Memorial Day storytime readers: former town board member and former library board of trustees president Shari Stottler; current trustee Melissa Jacobs; and Manor School third grader Abigal Jacobs. Thanks also to Shari, trustee Margaret Bailey and Friends of Mendon Library member Sandy Nicholson for their help with setup, booth staffing and take down!

Friends Offer Memorial Day Storytime During Family Picnic Event

The Friends of Mendon Public Library will host a special storytime at the Flags, Families and Fun Memorial Day family picnic. The event will be held on Monday, May 28, in Rotary Park on N. Main St. in Honeoye Falls, immediately following the parade and cemetery service.

Free picnic admission includes music by two bands and the 1:30 p.m. storytime at the Friends of the Mendon Library tent. Food and games will be available for purchase, and all proceeds from the event will benefit the new Veterans’ Memorial planned for Honeoye Falls.

Books that may be read during this special storytime include The Memorial Day Surprise by Theresa Martin Golding and The Wall by Eve Bunting and Ronald Himler.

The Memorial Day Surprise features a young boy whose mother tells him that the Memorial Day parade will include a big surprise, but it isn’t the bands or the candy. In the end, the boy discovers that the surprise is far more wonderful–it’s that his grandfather is a veteran in the parade.

The Wall is about a boy who travels to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial with his father to seek out his grandfather’s name.

8th Grade Weeders and Waterers Seek Beautification Project Supplies

Thanks to Sue Wiegand, a school counselor at Honeoye Falls-Lima Middle School, and her Wonderful Weeders and Waterers, our already beautiful, new Mendon Public Library will soon be undergoing a beautification project.

Last fall, Sue made a somewhat unusual request for donations … geranium donations, that is. And what a response she received! Over 150 geraniums were kept in storage this winter, waiting to be planted at the library this spring.

Well over half of the HFL eighth graders helped Sue collect, then care for, the geraniums throughout the winter months—transplanting, sorting by color, watering and trimming. Sue is coordinating a group of student and parent volunteers who will soon lend their time (and hands!) to planting the colorful flowers on the library grounds. The first work day is scheduled for Wednesday, May 30.

First, the Wonderful Weeders and Waterers would like to gather some very necessary supplies. They are putting out a request for benevolent community members to join in this effort by donating one or more of the items on the following list:

  • large planter(s)—at least 24 inches in diameter—for the front entrance to the new library
  • new or partially used bags of:
    • mulch—1/2 yard to be dropped off by the Monroe Street entrance
    • potting soil for the new planters
    • fertilizer for annuals
    • peat

If you are interested in being involved, please email Sue or leave her a voice message at 624.7111. Be sure to stop by the library soon to see how colorful it has become!

Support These Girl Scouts’ Silver Award Service Projects–and the Library

Lia Movalli and Emma Mays are seventh graders at the Honeoye Falls-Lima Middle School and Girl Scouts with Troop 636. They are working together to earn their Girl Scout Silver Award and have decided to make the library their project.

To earn their Silver Award, the girls are required to dedicate 50 hours for a community service project. Their goal is to raise $1,000 for the library. They ran a bake sale in October and raised $100.

Spare Change Drive! Movalli and Mays have placed donation boxes around town in local businesses, including Critics, the Brewery, Dipper Dan’s, Guida’s, and the Home Video Center. Their boxes can’t be missed since they are wrapped in bright red wrapping paper. If you have any spare change, please drop it into one of the boxes. The girls will really appreciate it!  A big thank you goes out to the involved businesses for their support.

Win a new Amazon Kindle!  Raffle tickets are being sold at the library for $5/ticket.  The drawing will be held on Sat., May 19.  You do not need to be present to win.

Building Buddies Club a Hit!

Eight children and seven adults recently attended the newly launched Building Buddies Club at the library. This club is a younger version of our very popular Building Blocks Club. It uses Duplo blocks (vs. Legos), which are better suited to toddlers and young builders. The purpose of the Building Buddies Club is to encourage creativity, fine motor skills, and parallel play. A side benefit is the opportunity for grown-ups to converse with one another while the children play.

Early Literacy Popular With Patrons

Friday mornings you will find stuffed animals of all shapes and sizes lounging in the Jacobs Family Reading Room while they wait for the sound of little feet and voices.

It’s not uncommon to also hear music from a recorder, singing, clapping, and a variety of fun voices as Miss Lydia makes books come alive for the children.

Our story times continue to be a favorite weekly event at the library. If you can’t make Friday mornings, you can always attend the story time on Monday or Tuesday at 10 a.m., or our Pajamarama Story Time (also hosted by Miss Lydia) on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.
