Village Aids With Sidewalk Project
Look! The railing on the new, handicapped-accessible sidewalk is now in place.
Special thanks to the team from the village of Honeoye Falls, which worked with the town crew to pour the sidewalk and build the wall.

Thanks to Bud Smith, Tom Vorhees and their team for their fine craftsmanship in completing the retaining wall, sidewalk and driveway between Main Street and Mendon Public Library.
Read more about the project in this previous post.
Thanks also to Paul Lonobile, who recently updated Main Street library sign to reflect that the new building so long planned as phase 1 of the new library project is no longer “coming soon” but, in fact, built. Paul also repaired the fire number.
Good progress is being made on the outside of the new library building, thanks to the days of fine weather between rain showers. For example, the pedestrian sidewalk from Monroe Street to the new library entrance is in, and the stone facade looks lovely. While our contractors have braved cold and other less desirable conditions to get the job done (thanks guys!), warmer, drier days are certainly a help as we head toward an on-time completion.
As the plans for the new library were put together, our architects (led by Trevor Harrison of HBT) shared their vision in two design charrettes–meetings seeking input from the public that were held in Honeoye Falls and the Hamlet of Mendon.
During these gatherings, residents clearly expressed that they thought a new library should have a fireplace. The option of a fireplace was able to be included in the final budget and the almost-finished result–a double fireplace serving two main areas of the library–is what you see in the photos here.
Mendon Public Library will be closed May 27-31 in observance of Memorial Day (Join us for the Flags, Books and Bands fund-raiser on May 30!) and to accommodate a computer update that will expand card catalog search options.
In fact, all Monroe County libraries will be closed over the holiday weekend for the system upgrade. During this time, online catalog services also will be suspended, including item searching, access to databases, the ability to check the status of your account or due dates, item renewals and the placing and filling of holds. No items checked out of the Monroe County Library System will be due during this time.
Mendon Public Library will close again June 13 for the big move. It will reopen at 9 a.m. Monday, June 27, in the new building. (If you’re placing holds that might come in during that time, you will need to set them up for delivery to Rush, Henrietta or Pittsford, or some other convenient Monroe County library.)
The library is closed on Saturdays during the summer. The last open Saturday is June 11.
If you have any questions, please call the library at 624-6067.
Ruth Hayes often says she can’t wait for phase 2 of the new Mendon Public Library, because the renovation plan includes transforming our historic 1936 library into a children’s room that preserves the red door and the knotty pine, while creating a new loft space and lots of places for little ones to cozy in and read.
In the meantime, the area shown in this photo will be one of the spaces for children. Glass panes will connect the top of the half wall to the ceiling. Once the children’s room in phase 2 is complete, this area will be used for reference and provide comfortable adult seating.
Each stone on the face of the new Mendon Public Library is carefully chosen based on its shape, size, and color. The end result is a stunning mosaic of stone that will remind patrons of the strong milling heritage of our town.
Mendon Public Library will close this week Tuesday and Wednesday for water line work related to the new building. There is a possibility that the library will need to close Thursday and Friday for this work as well. Watch this blog for updates!
The book drop in the Mendon Meadows Marketplace Mall, near the Mendon Pharmacy entrance next to the Redbox DVD rental kiosk, will still be available. Also, nearby libraries you can use during the closure include those in Rush, Henrietta and Pittsford–or any library that’s convenient to you in the Monroe County Library System.
The library will also be closed Easter Saturday, April 23, and reopen on Monday April 25.
If you have questions, please call 624-6067.
Siding is going up on the outside of the new library. It will be painted white to coordinate with the historic building. This photo was taken alongside the current library’s entrance, with Monroe Street at the photographer’s back. The door in the picture is the back door of the new library, where the truck from the Monroe County Library System will drop off materials you’ve put on hold, and pick up materials to be returned to other libraries in the system.
