Building Buddies Club a Hit!

Eight children and seven adults recently attended the newly launched Building Buddies Club at the library. This club is a younger version of our very popular Building Blocks Club. It uses Duplo blocks (vs. Legos), which are better suited to toddlers and young builders. The purpose of the Building Buddies Club is to encourage creativity, fine motor skills, and parallel play. A side benefit is the opportunity for grown-ups to converse with one another while the children play.

The Civil War discussion series group met by the fireplace. While they were cozy, some were also imagining meeting in the future library community room, which is envisioned for phase 2.

Participants in the Making Sense of the Civil War discussion series attended an introductory session on March 7 to meet one another, learn about the texts and topics they will be discussing over the next five months, and share their interest in and connection to the Civil War. Registration for the series reached the recommended maximum number of participants. The series was made possible by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities.

Civil War Discussion Series Starts March 7

It’s been 150 years since the Civil War. In honor of the sesquicentennial, Mendon Public Library will offer a five-part discussion series exploring various pieces of literature and different facets of the Civil War experience.

The “Making Sense of the Civil War Discussion Series” will meet from 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, March 7, March 28, April 25, May 30, June 27, and July 25. Teens, adults and seniors are invited to attend.

Participants will read an assigned text–such as historians’ accounts; novels; speeches; proclamations and government documents; news accounts; and, journals and letters from eye-witnesses to the transformative events of the mid-19th century. Then they’ll discuss that text with fellow participants, as well as scholar-facilitator Bruce Peckham, a member of the library board of trustees, and co-facilitator Lynne Menz, village historian for Honeoye Falls. (Read the introductory essay here.)

This wonderful enrichment opportunity is offered to the community thanks to a grant from The New York Council for the Humanities. Participants are asked to attend the entire series. For more information or to register, call Mendon Public Library at 585.624.6067.

Kids’ Building Blocks Club Based on Books and Teamwork

Terra proudly displays her “A Movie & Activity Night” creation.

What do you get when you cross books, Legos and creative kids who work together?

Masterpieces.

Mendon Public Library’s Building Blocks club is proof. Meeting every first and third Thursday from 3:30-4:30 p.m., Building Blocks Club introduces a theme (such as “space” or “aircraft”), provides books for ideas, and then encourages kids ages six to 12 to work together in small groups and get creative!

Perry (left), Isaac, Holden and Victoria worked together to create this complex structure. Click on the image to make it larger.

Finished products are placed on display in the library’s Children’s Area for a limited time.

Register your child for an upcoming club meeting by calling 624-6067. Space is limited to 10 so there are enough blocks for everyone.
