The Mendon Public Library is committed to communicating with its patrons and supporters in the most cost-effective and “green” manner. The new newsletter will contain detailed information on a wide range of topics for our library community. We plan to highlight new materials, staff picks, programs, and updates on the Heart of our Town Capital capital campaign. Look for the first issue in January 2012!

Our new electronic newsletter will be sent quarterly and exclusively to our permission-based email distribution list. We don’t want you to miss out on these newsletters, so subscribe now. Once you are subscribed, you will have the option of unsubscribing at any time.

Professional Packing Guidance Spurs Library to Close June 8

Mendon Public Library will close to the public on June 8 so the collection can be packed and labeled for the move to the new building. Tuesday, June 7, will be the last day the library is open to patrons in the current building. It will reopen at 9 a.m., June 27, in the new building.

Originally scheduled to close June 13 for the move, the library will be unavailable to the public just four more days than originally planned. The four extra days of closure will enable the library to use the professional movers’ careful system of labeling and packing, and help ensure the smoothest move possible.

In all, Mendon Public Library will be closed two and a half weeks for packing and moving. In contrast, many libraries close for a full month when moving to a new building.

During its period of closure from June 8-June 26, the library will accept books in its book drop, and strive to accommodate patrons that might have holds already on the hold shelf. Unfortunately, patrons will not be able to use library computers, nor to browse for materials during this time.

Nearby libraries you can use during the closure include those in RushHenrietta and Pittsford–or any library that’s convenient for you in the Monroe County Library System. If you have questions, please call the library at 624-6067.

Library’s Fireplace ‘Doubly’ Fulfills Residents’ Request

This side of the fireplace faces what will be an area for seniors.

As the plans for the new library were put together, our architects (led by Trevor Harrison of HBT) shared their vision in two design charrettes–meetings seeking input from the public that were held in Honeoye Falls and the Hamlet of Mendon.

During these gatherings, residents clearly expressed that they thought a new library should have a fireplace. The option of a fireplace was able to be included in the final budget and the almost-finished result–a double fireplace serving two main areas of the library–is what you see in the photos here.

This side of the fireplace faces the library's main reading room.

Library to Reopen Thursday as Sanitation Line Work Finished Early

Mendon Public Library will reopen at 9 a.m., Thurs., March 17, a day sooner than anticipated. Sanitation line work was expected to close the library both Wednesday and Thursday this week, but was completed in one day. The library’s regular hours in the top right corner of its Web page.

Library Expects to Close Briefly for Work on Sanitation Lines

The library expects to be closed one or two days this month when the sanitation lines for the new library are hooked up. Restrooms in the current library will not be available while the work is underway.

Unfortunately, the exact timing of the work is not yet known, but we’ll post the details both on this blog and on the Mendon Library’s Web site as soon as they become available.

Nearby libraries you can use during the closure include those in Rush, Henrietta and Pittsford–or any library that’s convenient to you in the Monroe County Library System. If you have questions, call 624-6067.

Window on the World

Capital campaign chairman Ron Knight likes to say that the library is a “window to the Internet”–and during these tough times, free high-speed Internet access is extra important to a lot of people.

The library is also a “window” on literacy, learning and–ultimately–knowledge. What does the library connect you to?

May the windows on Mendon’s new library, shown here being installed, remind us of all the opportunities a library opens up.

Promote Public Knowledge About the Petition

Today, you can help Mendon Public Library by letting people know key facts about the petition that’s circulating. It’s important that they have all the information they need to decide whether to sign, decline to sign or retract their signature.

It’s key to note that a referendum is an important right that citizens use to check on the actions of their elected officials. At the same time, a filed petition for referendum on the resolution at hand would come at great cost.

Details about the petition are available on the Mendon Public LIbrary Web site. Please read them, and then talk with your friends and neighbors about them.
