New Library Gets ‘Thumbs up’ From Very Special Patron

Submitted by Paula McIntyre, Library Assistant

According to Conan Gillis, 11, the new Mendon Public Library is a welcoming place, especially for someone like him who needs handicap accessibility. In addition to the wide aisles and first floor bathrooms that accommodate wheel chairs and baby strollers, the beautiful new surroundings are warm and welcoming. An added plus is the entire library collection is displayed on one floor.

If you’ve visited the new library and feel like it’s already full, that’s because this building is Phase 1 of a two-part project. Phase 2 involves renovating the old library to create the red door loft children’s area, a teen area, a versatile community meeting room, and a connection hall to the new library, once private funding has been raised.

Mendon Public Library’s summer reading program runs through Aug. 12, with prizes for children, teens and adults. The Art Beyond Borders traveling art exhibit will be on display until July 22. It ties in with the summer reading program theme and includes numerous interactive learning activities for all ages.

Upcoming library events include the Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on July 20 at 7 p.m.; Take Flight Paper Airplane Workshop on July 27 at 3:30 p.m. (held at Mendon Community Center); Siegfried the Weird White Peacock Book Talk and Signing by local author Laurie Mercer on July 28 at 11 a.m.; 1st Annual Mendon Public Library Benefit at The Rabbit Room on July 29 at 7 pm (tickets on sale at the library); Baby Sing, Sign and Play on Aug. 4 at 9:30 a.m., and story times for 3-5 year olds at 9:30 a.m. on July 29, Aug. 5 and Aug. 12.
