Monroe County Libraries Raise Fees to Cover State Aid Shortfall

With no increase in state funding since 1998 and with rising costs to provide state-supported services, almost every library in the Monroe County Library System is increasing its fees this year.

The income from these fees is being used to cover operating expenses for system libraries, not such capital expenses as new buildings. (Read this post for the latest on how Mendon Public Library’s new building is being funded.)

Mendon Public Library is adopting the county system’s recommended standard fee structure effective Sept. 1. The new overdue fine will be 35 cents per day per item. In addition, any hold picked up after Sept. 1 will cost $1.
